TANJIRO'S ONIGIRI TANJIRO-INSPIRED UPGRADE
🍙🔥 Let's make a Tanjiro-inspired Onigiri from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—simple Japanese rice balls with a savory filling and a nori wrap, perfect for an anime-themed snack.
🍙🔥 TANJIRO'S ONIGIRI
Makes: 6 onigiri
Prep: 15 minutes
Cooking: 20 minutes
🛒 Ingredients
Onigiri
- 2 cups Japanese short-grain rice
- 2½ cups water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 sheets nori (seaweed)
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds (optional)
Filling
- 150 g cooked salmon
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon mayonnaise (optional)
For Tanjiro's theme
- Thin strips of nori for decoration
- Black sesame seeds (optional)
👨🍳 How to Make It
1. Cook the rice 🍚
Rinse the Japanese short-grain rice several times until the water runs mostly clear.
Cook with 2½ cups water in a rice cooker. Let it rest for 10 minutes after cooking.
2. Prepare the filling 🐟
Flake the cooked salmon into small pieces. Mix with soy sauce and sesame oil. Add a little mayonnaise if you want a creamier filling.
3. Season your hands
Mix 1 teaspoon salt with a little water. Wet your hands lightly so the rice doesn't stick.
4. Shape the onigiri
Take a handful of warm rice and make a small indentation in the center.
Put about 1 tablespoon of salmon filling inside.
Cover the filling with more rice and gently press into a triangle shape, using your hands.
Don't squeeze too hard—the rice should hold together while remaining soft.
5. Add the nori 🌿
Cut nori into strips and wrap the bottom or sides of each onigiri.
For a stronger Tanjiro-inspired presentation, use small pieces of nori to create a dark green/black checkered accent reminiscent of his iconic haori.
6. Serve 🔥
Serve immediately while the rice is warm, or wrap individually if taking them for a picnic or anime watch party.
⚔️ TANJIRO-INSPIRED UPGRADE
Make a three-flavor Demon Slayer platter:
- 🟢 Tanjiro: salmon onigiri with green/black nori accents
- 🟡 Zenitsu: tuna-mayo onigiri with yellow decorative details
- 🟣 Giyu: salted salmon onigiri with dark blue/purple accents
⭐ Secret to perfect onigiri
Use Japanese short-grain rice. Its natural stickiness allows the rice ball to hold its shape without needing to mash or compress it.
And remember: wet hands + lightly salted hands + warm rice = much easier shaping. 🍙
